Sustainability • Environmental Stewardship

Sustainability is integral to the vegan lifestyle, that’s why the Vegan Festival Adelaide is committed to continuously improving our environmental impact each year.

Waste Management

The report from SUEZ confirms that the majority of the waste produced during last years festival was organics food waste recycling.

A major issue facing modern society is managing the amount of waste the growing population is producing. Festivals tend to produce a higher concentration of waste, so are in a good position to demonstrate and educate attendees on how to divert as much waste away from landfill as possible.

Our goal for the 2015 Vegan Festival was to have a zero waste event, and with the assistance of Cinderella Cleaning we came closer than previous years to achieving our goal.

Vegan Festival 2016

We are excited to be working with the 2016 SA Business of the Year: Adelaide Green Clean to put in place extra bins for compostable and recyclable items. They will also use environmentally safe cleaning products, ensuring the venue is left clean and the environment is not exposed to harmful chemicals in the process.

With the help of the professional cleaners and our wonderful volunteers we will have onsite education and support for attendees to dispose of their waste into the correct bin to divert as much waste from landfill as possible.

All food and drink stall holders will be advised to use only compostable ware (other than recyclable containers) so that attendees can quickly and easily place most of their waste for the day straight into the organics bins. We have teamed up with Pak-Rite to be the exclusive suppliers of compostable wares for our stall holders so that they can get the best prices and it doesn't cost the Earth.

Why is this so important?  It’s said that up to 40% of the average household garbage bin in Australia is food waste, which then ends up in landfill. We are all in the position to reduce this percentage, which can play a role in reducing the amount of methane released into the atmosphere.

At the Vegan Festival Adelaide 2016, the contents of the organics bins will be sent to a composting facility after the event instead of landfill. Composting ticks 3 of the 4 R’s: It Reduces the amount of waste to landfill, the organic matter is broken down by natural ecosystems so it is Recycled and can be Reused as a useful product for gardening, landscaping and growing more food.

The contents of the recycling bins are also diverted from landfill to a sorting facility that separates the items and ensures they are Recycled into new products and packaging.
