Philippe the Juggler
Belgium born and French speaking, I learned the art of juggling in 1983 while living in England. I attended juggling classes at a circus school located at Covent Garden, London, for a period of about 2 years.
After emigrating to Australia, I started teaching juggling for the Workers Educational Association (WEA), and later in 1986, I founded the Adelaide Juggling Club.
From being almost non-existent, juggling has become over these years one of the hottest pastimes for many Adelaidians. I have taught juggling to well over 7,000 people.
The Magical Suitcase
A journey into fantasy land where magical moments and illusions are created through the art of juggling. The show is tightly choreographed around various pieces of music and is best suited for theatre stage. To suit individual requirements, the show can be broken down into individual segments, or be presented as a whole:
v Magical Suitcase: on his journey of discoveries, the artist departs with nothing but a small and magical suitcase.
v Hoop: the inner energy of a motionless stainless steel hoop is revealed through intriguing manipulations.
v Synergy: a single crystal ball is gently set in motion, creating endless illusions of a free floating, weightless ball.
v Emergence: 6 crystal balls are brought to life, creating mesmerising and ephemeral moments of surreal beauty.
v 3-ball juggling: Ragtime! Juggling starts in earnest, tightly synchronised with a jazzy background music.
v 4 & 5-ball juggling: 4 and 5 balls march on to dizzy heights, to the catching tune of Strauss’ Radetzky March.
v Cigar Boxes: seemingly impossible feats are executed with three boxes, which are constantly swapped, spun and caught unexpectedly at the last possible moment.
I have performed this show at the 1st International Australian Juggling Festival (Denmark, WA, 1995) and also at the 5th International New-Zealand Juggling Convention (Auckland 1997).
The Magical Suitcase has also been presented at many venues such as the Bakehouse Theatre, the Capri Theatre, the Nexus Cabaret, the Lion's Art Centre, the Matthew Flinders Theatre, Heavens Night Club, the Hopgood Theatre, and, at Her Majesty’ Theatre where, for two nights, I was the support act for the Lenny Henry Touring Show.
I was also presented with the Wunderbar award, for the best performance of the 2003 Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival.
More recently I was invited to perform at the gala shows for the 2009 Melbourne Juggling Convention and for the 2009 Adelaide Magic Convention. In 2010, I also performed at the Nexus Cabaret as part of the 100th anniversary of the Alliance Francaise of SA and at the Adelaide Intercontinental Hotel as part of the Bastille Day dinner.
